Hi Deirdre, I happened upon your post about Liberdade and came here to share just how much your work on economic writing shaped my own development as a writer. You were assigned reading in my undergrad thesis class, and I used my thesis as a proving ground for your guidance. Eight years later, I use the style I forged in that class in my professional writing.

I owe you a lot, and I imagine I’m not alone. Thank you for sharing your opinionated and entertaining perspectives on the craft!

Well said Deirdre. Jacques Barzun was keen on the art and craft of writing, among his 30+ volumes are some on research and writing,

He lived from 1907 to 2012 and he may have been forgotten in his own lifetime if not for a late surge with Dawn to Decadence. In 60 years I've only met two or three people in Australia who had even recognised his name.

Look out for wind droughts, they are an existential threat to western civilization. https://rafechampion.substack.com/p/the-sinister-threat-of-wind-droughts

AI cannot now write well, but it writes better than last year. It is probably already in a trajectory that will take it to writing journalism better than an average future journalist now in high middle school, possibly even high school, will ever write.

(Journalists are making that easier by writing less well every year.)
